Turkington Psychiatry Limited was incorporated in 2010. Over the last 15 years the company has traded profitably, providing both medicolegal and educational services.
The Managing Director is Dr Douglas Turkington, MD FRCPsych who served as Professor of Psychosocial Psychiatry at Newcastle University between 2006 and 2021. This was a part-time honorary appointment and he worked full-time as a Consultant Psychiatrist with CNTW NHS Foundation Trust between 1991 and June of 2024.
He next spent 14 years working as the Consultant Psychiatrist with the newly formed Self-harm team and Liaison service covering both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospitals. He chaired the multi-agency North-East of England suicide prevention task force. He set up the chronic fatigue syndrome/ME clinic in the Royal Victoria Infirmary and established a liaison Neurology service with Dr M Jackson and a Cardiology liaison service with Dr JP Bourke at the Freeman Hospital. Thereafter he worked with the bed management service based at Monkwearmouth Hospital until retirement from the NHS in June of 2024. In this post he did trusted assessments across the inpatient units of the trust advising on the management of complex cases including complex treatment resistant psychoses and complex PTSD/EUPD borderline clients. As of February 2025, he has published 246 academic publications in peer reviewed journals/book chapters and has co-authored 13 books.
He has been cited 7,487 times in the academic literature. He is a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy based in Philadelphia, USA. Since retirement from the NHS he is appraised and revalidated by the Independent Doctors Federation. He has produced between 80 and 100 high quality medico-legal reports each year for the Courts since 2010. The split is 50% Claimant:40% defendant:10%joint. He has continued to deliver webinars, workshops and training courses around the UK and internationally as requested. He has delivered training programmes in Australia, Brazil, Canada, USA, Norway, Denmark, Italy and China. Turkington Psychiatry Limited continues to provide high quality and innovative educational activities and medicolegal services.
