Medico-Legal and Educational/Academic summary
I served as Consultant Psychiatrist with CNTW NHS Foundation Trust from 1991 until my retirement in June of 2024. Prior to my Consultant post I trained in Psychiatry in Glasgow and then in Sheffield. I am a member of the Expert Witness Institute and I have been involved in medico-legal practice in the north of England now since 1993. I prepare expert psychiatric reports at the request of solicitors acting for the Claimant, Defendant and Jointly. The ratio of instruction is 50%:40%:10%. The psychiatric reports are prepared for the Court in relation to alleged psychiatric injury arising from alleged breach of duty in employment, health delivery or accident settings. Expert psychiatric opinion is given on the nature of any psychiatric injury, vulnerability, causation, apportionment, treatment, prognosis and residual earning capacity. Such assessments are done in my consulting rooms on the Quayside in Newcastle or remotely by Zoom if appropriate. I liaise with Counsel and other psychiatric experts as required and attend Court to give expert evidence as needed. I currently do 2 such assessments each week each lasting approximately 2 hours with the report being completed within 7 days on average. The waiting time for reports is currently 4-6 weeks. Terms and conditions of service are available for perusal.
I served as honorary Professor of Psychosocial Psychiatry at Newcastle University from 2006 until 2021 at which point I retired from academic practice. I am a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and have published 240 peer reviewed articles on the subject of the treatment of severe mental disorders, PTSD, Liaison psychiatry and psychological treatment in particular CBT. I have published 12 books on the treatment of severe mental disorders. I have delivered workshops and lectures internationally including China, Australia, United States, Canada, Brazil and all over Europe. I have acted as principle investigator on a number of funded randomized controlled trials of treatment. I served on the NICE guideline panels for schizophrenia and depression. Webinars to deliver training and supervision remain available if needed and requests for such training are invited. I am currently practicing and appraised annually under the auspices of the Independent Doctors Federation.
